I think it was you, Stefan, who suggested "[ox]" as a logo long ago.
Personally I consider it the "official" logo for quite some time now.
Personally I like it very much because (to me) it is visually quite
attractive, easy to remember and to produce (with every word
processor) and has a strong link to the (German) mailing list.
If I need something more, hmm... "cosy" picture I typically use

However, years ago people didn't like the mental xconnection to the
USA...

Yes. "[ox]" allows for a lot of nice variations :-) .
