Copyright and software patents:
pen vs. proprietary development paths
On 4-5 December 2003, the Center for Tele-Information, Technical
University of Denmark, organizes its 8th annual international
conference this year on copyright and software patents. A selection
of the best papers for the conference will be published in the
international journal Telematics and Informatics in spring 2004. The
overall topic of the conference concerns open vs. proprietary
development paths with respect to content and software production. In
spite of the various specificities of the two fields, there is a
common ground, and the conference seeks to explore both this common
ground and the special features of the two areas.
With P2P Internet technology, content industries face major copyright
challenges. During recent years the music industry, e.g., has
witnessed decreasing CD sales. There are various reasons for this
development. However, Internet downloads clearly play a role.
Protection of copyright has always played a central role in content
industries, but Internet is a new aspect to take into consideration.
Software patents are another issue, related to the copyright issue in
many ways. They are both intellectual property rights issues and in
both areas there is a growing discussion regarding the development of
new business models, as the old business models based on
well-protected copyrights and proprietary software are being
challenged. In the software area, open software solutions and business
models are increasingly seen as viable alternatives to more
traditional modes of software development and usage.
The Center for Tele-Information solicits papers touching on either one
of the two topics, or both, to be presented at its 8th international
conference at the Technical University of Denmark in December 2003.
All accepted papers will be published in proceedings of the
conference, and a selection of papers will be published in Telematics
and Informatics.

Abstracts (app. one page) for papers must be sent to Center for
Tele-Information for review no later than 5 September 2003.
Notification of acceptance will be given 1 October 2003, and finalized
papers must be delivered by 21 November 2003.
